What Is IFR + Air Purifying Fabric?

IFR + Air Purifying Fabric combines inherent flame retardancy with additional air-quality-related textile functionality.

BEGOODTEX currently applies this function to Sheer, Voile, Mesh, Brushed, and Jacquard fabrics used in curtains, healthcare textiles, and other interior applications.

How Does Air Purifying Fabric Work?

The mechanism depends on the specific fabric technology.

BEGOODTEX describes its Air Purifying category as using functional fibers and textile structures to help trap dust, pollen, and some fine particles, with selected technologies also involving adsorption or photocatalytic mechanisms.

Because different fabrics use different constructions, buyers should confirm the specific mechanism, tested pollutant, test method, and measured performance for the selected product rather than assuming all Air Purifying fabrics work in the same way.

Air Purifying vs. PM2.5 Protection

These functions overlap but are not identical.

PM2.5 Protection Fabric focuses more specifically on reducing the penetration or movement of fine airborne particles.

Air Purifying Fabric is a broader functional category that may involve particle capture, adsorption, or other textile technologies intended to support indoor air quality.

Some BEGOODTEX products combine both. BG-A187-801, for example, is classified as IFR + Air Purifying + PM2.5 Protection + GRS.

Where Is IFR + Air Purifying Fabric Used?

Typical applications include curtains and blinds, sheer curtains, medical curtains, healthcare interiors, hotels, offices, public spaces, and other indoor textile projects.

Air Purifying functionality can also be combined with PM2.5 Protection, GRS recycled content, antibacterial properties, or other functions, depending on the selected fabric.

What Standards Should IFR + Air Purifying Fabric Meet?

Air-purifying performance and flame retardancy should be verified separately.

For example, BG-A187-801 currently supports NFPA 701, CA Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109-14, and JIS L 1091.

Selected Air Purifying mesh fabrics also support standards including BS 5867 Type C, NFPA 701, DIN 4102-B1, CA Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109-14, and JIS L 1091.

These are flame-retardant standards and do not prove air-purifying efficiency. When air-quality performance is a key purchasing requirement, buyers should also request product-specific functional test data.
