What Is IFR + Antibacterial Fabric?

IFR + Antibacterial Fabric combines inherent flame retardancy with antimicrobial functionality in one textile. The flame retardant property comes from the fiber itself, while antibacterial performance is introduced through functional yarns, finishing, or other antimicrobial treatments.

BEGOODTEX's current range includes antibacterial medical curtain fabrics, jacquard fabrics, mesh constructions, healthcare textiles, and selected garments.

How Is Antibacterial Performance Tested?

Antibacterial claims should be supported by testing on the actual finished fabric.

Selected BEGOODTEX medical curtain fabrics have been tested to ASTM E2149 for antimicrobial activity. One tested inherent flame retardant antibacterial fabric showed more than 99% bacterial reduction against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella pneumoniae under the stated test conditions.

Does Antibacterial Performance Last After Washing?

Durability depends on the antibacterial technology and fabric construction. BEGOODTEX's current IFR + Antibacterial category states that selected fabrics can retain over 90% antibacterial efficiency after 50 washes.

For commercial projects, buyers should confirm the laundering method, number of wash cycles, tested organism, and antibacterial result for the exact product rather than assuming every antibacterial fabric has the same wash durability.

Antibacterial vs. Antiviral Fabric

These terms are not interchangeable.

Antibacterial fabric is tested for its ability to reduce or inhibit specified bacteria.

Antiviral fabric requires separate testing against specified viruses. An antibacterial result alone does not prove antiviral performance.

Selected BEGOODTEX products also list antiviral performance against influenza A, but this should be confirmed through the corresponding product-specific test report.

Where Is IFR + Antibacterial Fabric Used?

Typical applications include hospital cubicle curtains, medical privacy curtains, healthcare uniforms, shower curtains, nursing facilities, clinics, and other public or institutional textile applications.

Antibacterial functionality can also be combined with additional properties such as water repellency and mildew resistance when the project requires multiple functions.

What Standards Can IFR + Antibacterial Fabric Meet?

Selected BEGOODTEX IFR + Antibacterial products support flame retardant standards including NFPA 701, BS 5867 Type C, CA Title 19, DIN 4102-B1, NF P92-503 M1, JIS L 1091, and CAN/ULC-S109, depending on the product.

Antibacterial performance is tested separately. Selected fabrics support ASTM E2149, while multifunctional products may also include AATCC 30 for mildew-related performance and ISO 4920 for water repellency.

The flame retardant and antibacterial reports should therefore be confirmed separately for the exact fabric before ordering.
