What Is Flame Retardant Coated Fabric?

Flame retardant coated fabric is made by applying a functional layer to a textile base to add properties that the original fabric may not provide on its own. Depending on the construction, the coating can improve water resistance, light blocking, heat reflection, surface protection, or other functional performance. BEGOODTEX offers coated constructions including blackout, composite, silver-coated, Oxford, canvas, and decorative fabrics for different commercial applications.

Does Coating Make Fabric Waterproof?

A suitable coating can significantly improve the fabric's resistance to water, but the final waterproof or water-repellent level depends on the coating material, application method, coating weight, and finished construction. For tents, outdoor gear, or protective covers, buyers should confirm the required waterproof test rather than assuming that every coated fabric provides the same level of protection. Some BEGOODTEX coated fabrics are additionally tested to ISO 4920 for water repellency.

Coated Blackout and Silver-Coated Fabric

Coatings can also be used for more than water protection. Coated blackout fabric adds a light-blocking layer for curtains and blinds requiring stronger privacy and darkness. Silver-coated fabric uses a reflective surface that can improve light blocking and heat reflection, making it useful for curtains, tents, outdoor equipment, and other functional textile applications.

Common Uses of Flame Retardant Coated Fabric

Flame retardant coated fabric is commonly used for curtains and blinds, blackout curtains, tents, outdoor gear, protective covers, upholstery, bags, and other technical textile products. The correct construction should be selected according to the required balance of flame retardancy, waterproofing, blackout performance, weight, flexibility, and surface appearance.

What Flame Retardant Standards Can Coated Fabric Meet?

Depending on the specific construction and end use, BEGOODTEX coated fabrics are available with test support for standards such as NFPA 701, BS 5867 Type C, CA Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109-14, DIN 4102-B1, EN 13501-1, EN 13773 Class 1, NF P92-503 M1, JIS L 1091, and GOST R 50810-95. The applicable standard and test report should be confirmed for the selected fabric and final application before ordering.
