What Is IFR + Wear-Resistant Fabric?

IFR + Wear-Resistant Fabric combines flame-resistant performance with improved durability against repeated rubbing and surface abrasion.

BEGOODTEX currently applies Wear-Resistant functionality to upholstery fabrics, workwear, technical fabrics, bedding, air-duct textiles, and other products exposed to frequent mechanical contact. The current function page states that selected fabrics can be tested to 50,000 Martindale cycles.

What Is the Martindale Abrasion Test?

The Martindale method is widely used to evaluate textile abrasion resistance.

ISO 12947-2 specifies a procedure for determining fabric specimen breakdown under repeated abrasion at fixed inspection intervals.

Higher cycle counts generally indicate that a fabric has withstood more repeated abrasion under the specified test conditions, but buyers should compare results only when the test method, pressure, endpoint, and fabric condition are comparable.

BEGOODTEX BG-160, for example, lists both ASTM D4966-12 and ISO 12947-2 as additional abrasion-related standards.

Where Is IFR + Wear-Resistant Fabric Used?

Typical applications include sofas and chairs, hotel furniture, transport seating, protective workwear, tactical clothing, bags, air ducts, bedding, and industrial technical textiles. Current BEGOODTEX Wear-Resistant products include upholstery fabrics, cotton-nylon workwear fabrics, Para-Aramid mesh, canvas, bedding fabrics, and technical air-duct materials.

The required abrasion level should be matched to actual use. A decorative curtain, hotel sofa, workwear garment, and industrial duct do not require the same durability specification.

What Standards Can IFR + Wear-Resistant Fabric Meet?

Wear resistance and flame resistance should be verified separately.

For furniture upholstery, BEGOODTEX BG-160 currently lists flame-related standards including BS 5852 Crib 5, CAL TB 117, DIN EN 1021-1, IMO FTP Code Part 8, NFPA 701, CA Title 19, CAN/ULC-S109-14, NF P92-503 M1, and JIS L 1091, together with ASTM D4966-12 and ISO 12947-2 for abrasion-related performance.
